FTP Server
The FTP services provide file transfer, personal storage and archival functions within the hochstaffl.eu infrastructure.
Several FTP servers are operated for different purposes. Depending on the service, access is either anonymous or restricted to authenticated users.

Service Overview
- Anonymous FTP – public or unrestricted access to selected files
- User Storage – individual storage areas for authorized users
- Archive Storage – long-term storage and transfer of archived data
- Application Data Transfer – file exchange between systems and automated processes
Anonymous FTP
Anonymous FTP provides access to files that do not require individual user authentication.
It is intended for data that can be made generally available and for applications that require simple file distribution.
Anonymous users only have access to the directories and files explicitly provided for this purpose.
User Storage
Authorized users can access individual FTP storage areas.
Each user has a separate directory for storing and transferring files. Access to these directories requires authentication and is restricted to the respective user or other explicitly authorized accounts.
User storage can be used for:
- Transferring files between systems
- Temporary storage
- Exchanging larger files
- Accessing files remotely where FTP is appropriate
Archive Storage
FTP is also used for transferring and accessing archived data.
Archive storage is intended for data that must be retained but does not need to remain on primary storage systems. Depending on the application, files may be transferred to the archive manually or by automated processes.
The archive is used for long-term storage rather than active user data.
Application and System Transfers
Some systems use FTP for automated file transfers between servers, applications or processing systems.
These services use dedicated directories and access permissions appropriate to the individual application.
Access
Access depends on the FTP service being used:
- Anonymous services do not require an individual account.
- Personal storage requires an authorized user account.
- Archive and application areas are restricted according to their intended purpose.
Not all FTP services use the same authentication mechanism. Access credentials and permissions are managed according to the respective server and service configuration.
Notes
FTP services are intended primarily for file transfer and compatibility with existing systems and workflows.
For general user file synchronization and sharing, the on-premises Nextcloud service should normally be used instead.
