PC Hardware Specifications
This page provides general hardware recommendations for an EUMETCast reception station. These requirements should be treated as guidelines. Hardware should be selected and tested to ensure that all components are compatible with the required EUMETCast services.
Processor
A modern multi-core processor is recommended. The CPU should provide sufficient capacity for EUMETCast reception as well as operating system tasks and any additional applications running on the station.
Memory
At least 2 GB RAM is required.
Depending on the TelliCast configuration, approximately 512 MB to 1 GB may be required for a RAM disk used for the file database and buffers. Using a RAM disk is recommended to reduce disk I/O and help prevent data loss during periods of high data throughput.
The required RAM disk size depends on the number and type of services received.
Storage
Storage requirements depend on the amount of received data and the required retention period.
Example data volumes:
- 22.5 Mbps: approximately 220 GB per day
- 34 Mbps: approximately 340 GB per day
Provide sufficient additional capacity for temporary files, processing and system operation.
Storage Interface
A fast and reliable storage interface is recommended. SSD, SATA or other suitable storage technologies may be used.
The storage system should provide sufficient sustained I/O performance for the received data rate. Using RAM disks for TelliCast buffers can further reduce disk-related performance problems.
PCI / PCIe
If an internal DVB reception card is used, ensure that the computer provides a compatible PCI or PCIe interface.
See DVB Reception Devices for additional information.
Network
A Gigabit Ethernet interface is recommended.
The network interface is required when using a DVB receiver/router and may also be used to distribute received data to other computers.
More than one network interface may be useful when separating DVB reception traffic from the local network.
USB
USB ports may be required for the EUMETCast Key Unit (EKU), USB DVB receivers and other peripheral devices.
Ensure that a sufficient number of compatible USB ports are available.
